Pulled this out randomly for a spin tonight and I was diddled away past how practiced this record sounds. A crystal clear recording, great mix and every instrument sounds spot on.
Superb mastering and a flawless pressing. I dear this iteration of the famous Jazz Messengers and Curtis Fuller really adds a cool dimension to the sound of the band. Art Blakey'southward drums sound fantastic, especially the toms.
This is ane of the best of the Classic series releases, just stellar.
Despite an AllMusic review granting iv stars (out of five), and fifty-fifty with a meticulous from-analog-source-tapes effort, information technology would seem that Blue Annotation over issued this 80th Anniversary series. Perhaps they were looking to brand upwardly for the shoddy & greedy production plan for the 75th Series. This sounds superb, and is definitely worth owning. Unusual for a coveted title like this to shrink beneath original sealed, retail toll, but it does happen and it has happened hither to Buhaina's unDelight. Get it while the value is still depressed. Over time as the market absorbs excess inventory, expect some price appreciation. Now is the fourth dimension.
Music mastering is superb. Tip of the lid to Kevin Gray. Arts drums are booming (in a adept way). The pressing quality is questionable with plenty of audible zips through the non-infill on side A. Side B is perfect. Please dump the newspaper inner sleeves!
Immaculate pressing. Fulsome sound. Swings mightily. KG is on a roll.
Very squeamish pressing! Lots of item. Very happy to take this in my collection.

In 1961, the invaluable contribution that Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton and Curtis Fuller gave to The Jazz Messengers (in this instance expanded to a sextet format along with the one-time well-known members: Wayne Shorter, Jymie Merrit and the leader, of course, Art Blakey), allows you to enjoy the band's sound in a more sober style but with an overwhelming solidity. This interesting record made in winter of '61–just finally released by Blue Note in summer of '63– is the third and last testimony of that lineup. The pick of themes is nifty; the A side is simply provocative, start with the refined and powerful 'Backstage Sally', composed by Wayne Shorter and where the sharp contumely section stands out; followed by the exquisite carol 'Contemplation' (too by Shorter) and closing with Blakey'south forceful pulsate fills and solo on the main theme, 'Bu's Please', composed by Curtis Fuller. The B side has more highlights to offering, opening with another excellent Wayne Shorter composition, 'Reincarnation Dejection'; Shorter's own solo is hitting from the start, in a time when he had already achieved his unique sound and was recognized for his special mode of phrasing. The elegance of Cedar Walton's 'Shaky Jake', for example, establishes a keen blues with the unmistakable Merritt-Blakey's swing-pulse, bankroll the masterful solos by Hubbard, Shorter, Fuller and Walton himself. Shorter's arrangement of the classic 'Moon River' may seem a scrap eccentric but offers a curious catastrophe to the tracklist. Nevertheless, we are dealing with significant material from this particular period of The Messengers out of the famous Lee Morgan-Bobby Timmons configuration, which makes ππΆπ©π’πͺπ―π’'π΄ ππ¦ππͺπ¨π©π΅ a more than singular and fortunate album.
It is worth noting the unsurpassed quality of the recording, as can but be expected from these wonderful Rudy Van Gelder'southward studio sessions which continue making history to this twenty-four hours. Of course, Kevin Grayness's remastering work and lacquer cut for these Blue Annotation 80th Anniversary Serial makes the music come through more than conspicuously and in an astounding grade. For me, information technology's like discovering a new universe of sound dynamics: you're privileged to have Fine art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers in your ain living room! In decision, this new release is undoubtedly an splendid choice to heed to this astonishing music in all its splendor, in a tranquility vinyl pressing and for an affordable price as well.

Very poor Quality Command. I fear Blue Note is leaning toward quantity in detriment of quality. This vinyl looks similar it was dropped on the flooring and someone stepped on it. Surface noise throughout. Very disappointed.
This pressing is amazing! Definitely option information technology up while you lot can!

A archetype jazz anthology, one of Blakey's best, with probably the best Jazz Messengers ensemble with Shorter and Freddie Hubbard. And the audio and pressing are simply superb. These 80th anniversary releases are so well washed, and this one might be my favorite thus far based on the performance and the mastering/pressing (though Lonnie Smith's "Think", Dexter Gordon'southward "Doin Allright" and Kenny Dorham's "Una Mas" are as well wonderful). Highly recommended.
